As economic migrants, we leave our homelands, family, and everyday lives in order to seek better living conditions, facing challenges in language and culture. Enduring this experience is a demanding endeavour whereby in order to successfully integrate, we need to be resilient and learn to adapt quickly to new surroundings. However, as we adapt, do we risk losing our identity? What is left behind along this journey of transformation, and what remains? How do our surroundings change us physically and emotionally and how is this reflected in our everyday life?
This artist book explores the following concepts:
What is a passport? A universal document that embodies identity. It documents facts: nationality, name, date and place of birth. But at the same time, says nothing about who we are as individuals..
Ephemeral fragility of materials: A document, a piece of paper, card and ink.
As audience, questions you might consider:
Why did I age the paper?
Why does the text vanish as you pass the pages?
Why does the portrait rotate throughout?
Why do you think the face disappears as you pass the pages. Do you think there might be a relationship with time?
